A Love By Your Side Excels on the International Film Festival Circuit, Stirring Conversation about the Human Condition

Filmmaker/Writer/Director Paul Spencer Alexander understands that a well-crafted short film gets its power when it tells a relatable story in a few minutes, but lingers in the minds of viewers for days or weeks. This is the impetus that brought his short film, “A Love By Your Side,” to life.

In 2016, judges from several film festivals across the U.S. and overseas agreed, making the film an official selection or finalist in their lineups. Festivals included Los Angeles CineFest (August 2016), The Industry Boost Competition (Winter 2016) and the Mediterranean Film Festival (Winter 2016). The Flagler Film Festival (taking place January 13-15, 2017) will be the latest to showcase his work on January 14, 2017 during their fourth annual event.

This year, Alexander is hoping to do more than get “A Love By Your Side,” into more festivals. He’s also determined to get it in front of the eyes of ordinary citizens and into conversations about isolation–a subject that is both timelier than ever, yet absolutely timeless.

“2016 was a watershed year in terms of politics, and how we viewed mortality with the loss of so many beloved celebrities,” says Alexander. “People are so consumed by their email and smart phones that they don’t connect with others in a meaningful way. As a result, many react to adversity or uncertainty by withdrawing from their world or allow their anger to push others away. Because of this, my intention as a filmmaker is to encourage viewers to take notice of how much misery others go through without their immediate knowledge. If viewers take away one lesson from the film, it is that humans are interconnected, and losing touch with this can be devastating. Despite our social nature, people languish in the face of loneliness, isolation, and broken hearts.”

The film, shot mainly on location in St. Augustine, FL, at North America’s oldest school house (along with shooting in Palm Coast/Flagler County, FL, Daytona Beach, FL, New York, NY, and Studio City, CA), depicts a lost soul who may be trapped by her own negative thoughts or influenced by a malevolent, false friend. The teacher’s state of mind and her alienation are subject to personal interpretation.

Through the teacher’s experience, the viewers (with the help of multi-layered imagery, Alexander’s musical score and vocal performance narrating the story) go on a journey of redemption and gain a better understanding of how to break free from the most confining prison on earth—the one that exists in one’s own mind. As she gets closer to conquering her loneliness and finding true love, viewers grasp the importance of helping others find companionship to escape from personal or social isolation.

About Paul Spencer Alexander:

Paul Spencer Alexander is a Palm Coast, FL-based filmmaker, songwriter, visual artist, and performer. He began his professional career in New York City, with resume highlights that include landing an indie publishing deal sponsored by the Armani Exchange clothing company; winning a music video contest for a performance noted in the Village Voice; and performing at numerous clubs as well as the Beverly Hills Film Festival. During his years in Los Angeles, his live and recorded performances earned him international attention through the Music Industry News Network. Alexander studied broadcasting (video) and English literature with a creative writing concentration at the University of Miami, Florida.
